darkness

A darkness so thick it can be felt covers Egypt for three days in Exodus 10, while the Israelites still have light where they live.

decorated-tunic

Jacob gives Joseph a decorated tunic marking his favor; his brothers strip it from him and dip it in goat's blood in Genesis 37; Potiphar's wife seizes it when Joseph flees her advances in Genesis 39.

dew

In Exodus 16 a layer of dew covers the camp; when it lifts, manna lies on the desert surface, fine and granular like hoarfrost.

diamond

A precious stone in the second row of the breastplate of judgement, with garnet and sapphire.

dog

Meat of anything savaged by wild animals in the countryside must not be eaten; it is thrown to the dogs.

donkey

Beast of burden; the first-born donkey is redeemed with an animal from the flock, or its neck is broken. An enemy's stray donkey must be taken back.

door

If a Hebrew slave chooses to stay, his master leads him to the door or the doorpost and pierces his ear with an awl, and the slave is permanently his.

dough

Israel carries unleavened dough from Egypt, bowls wrapped in cloaks, and bakes unleavened cakes because the dough had not risen in the haste of departure.

dove

Noah releases a dove to test whether floodwaters have receded.

dream

God speaks in dreams to Abimelech and Jacob; Joseph dreams of sheaves and stars in Genesis 37, interprets prison dreams in Genesis 40, and interprets Pharaoh's cow and grain dreams in Genesis 41.

Dwelling

On the first day of the first month in the second year Moses erects the Dwelling and anoints it. The cloud covers the Tent of Meeting and the glory of Yahweh fills the Dwelling so Moses cannot enter.
