ladder

Jacob dreams of a ladder reaching to heaven with angels ascending and descending at Bethel.

lamb

Isaac asks about the lamb for the burnt offering before God provides a ram; in Exodus 13 a first-born donkey is redeemed with a lamb or kid.

lambs

Seven lambs are set apart by Abraham as evidence for the Beersheba well agreement. Two yearling male lambs are offered each day in perpetuity on the altar of the Tent of Meeting, one at dawn and one at twilight.

lamp-stand

A lamp-stand of beaten gold with almond-blossom cups and seven lamps. It stands on the south side of the Dwelling, opposite the table. It is anointed with the holy oil. Bezalel and Oholiab are commissioned to make the pure lamp-stand.

lamps

Seven lamps mounted on the gold lamp-stand light the space in front of it. Israel is to keep a lamp burning all the time with pure pounded olive oil. When Aaron trims the lamps each morning and puts them back at twilight, he burns incense on the gold altar.

leather

Fine leather is given with rams' skins and acacia wood. A cover of it is laid over the tent of the Dwelling, above the rams' skins dyed red.

leaven

Leaven must be cleaned out for Unleavened Bread; Israel must not offer the blood of Yahweh's sacrificial victim with leavened bread, nor leave the Passover victim until the following day.

lentils

Jacob cooks lentil stew that Esau trades his birthright to obtain.

lightning

Lightning strikes with the hail plague in Egypt and flashes at Sinai; after the Ten Words the people see it with thunder, trumpet and smoke, and keep their distance.

lintel

Passover blood is put on the lintel and both door-posts so Yahweh will pass over the house and not allow the Destroyer to enter.

livestock

Livestock marks patriarchal wealth and plague judgments; the Sabbath command rests the animals of the household along with sons, daughters, servants, and the alien.

loaves

Loaves were baked by Sarah from fine flour; the table of the Dwelling holds the loaves of permanent offering, listed among the work Israel is to make.

locusts

Locusts swarm over Egypt in Exodus 10, devouring what the hail left, stripping trees and fields bare, and leaving the land devastated.
