galbanum

Galbanum is one of the sweet spices, with storax, onycha and pure frankincense in equal parts, compounded into the holy incense reserved for Yahweh.

gallows

Joseph interprets the chief baker's dream as a sign that Pharaoh will hang him on a gallows in three days in Genesis 40.

garnet

A precious stone in the second row of the breastplate of judgement, with sapphire and diamond.

gate

The gate appears in covenant promise imagery, as Jacob's name for Bethel, and as the town gate where Hamor and Shechem address their townsmen in Genesis 34.

gifts

Abraham's servant carries gifts to confirm his master's marriage proposal; Jacob sends livestock to conciliate Esau, and in Genesis 43 sends balsam, honey, and other products of Canaan to Joseph.

goats-hair

Goats' hair is given as a freewill contribution. Eleven sheets of it form a tent over the Dwelling.

gold

Gold marks wealth and worship furnishings; Israel gives gold as a freewill contribution. The ark, mercy-seat, table and lamp-stand are of gold; Aaron's vestments, ephod, breastplate, bells and flower are of gold. The incense altar is overlaid with pure gold. Bezalel is filled with God's spirit to work in gold, silver and bronze. Aaron melts the people's gold rings into a calf, a god of gold.

golden-calf

Aaron melts the people's gold rings in a mould and makes the statue of a calf. Israel shouts that this is the God who brought them from Egypt; they worship it and offer sacrifice. Moses burns the calf, grinds it to powder, scatters it on the water, and makes the Israelites drink it. Yahweh punishes the people for the calf Aaron made.

grating

A grating of bronze network for the altar, with four bronze rings at its corners. It sits below the altar's ledge, halfway up.

gum-tragacanth

Gum tragacanth is loaded on Ishmaelite camels bound for Egypt in Genesis 37 and sent as a gift from Canaan to Joseph in Genesis 43.
